IB and IGCSE Tuition in India: What a Good Tutor Does Differently
Parents who move a child from CBSE or ICSE to an international board are often surprised by the same thing: the tutoring that worked before stops working. The subject matter overlaps heavily. The assessment does not — and assessment is what tutoring has to serve.
This is a practical guide to what changes, what to look for in an IB or IGCSE tutor, and how to check that someone genuinely has board experience rather than a familiar-sounding CV.
What actually differs
The headline difference is that IB and IGCSE ask students to show a process, not just arrive at an answer. That plays out in a few concrete ways:
- Internal assessment carries real weight. The IB Diploma's internal assessments, the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge are graded coursework, not practice. A tutor who only prepares students for the final papers is ignoring a large share of the grade.
- Command terms are the syllabus. "State", "describe", "explain", "evaluate" and "discuss" have defined meanings and defined mark allocations. Students lose marks for answering a different question from the one asked, even when the physics is right.
- Mark schemes reward method. IGCSE and IB papers award marks along the working. A student trained to jump to the answer leaves marks on the table in a way CBSE's structure often forgives.
- Higher and Standard Level are different courses. Not the same course at two speeds. A tutor comfortable with SL Maths is not automatically able to teach HL Analysis and Approaches.
What a good IB or IGCSE tutor does differently
Watch for these in a first session — they separate genuine board experience from general subject competence:
- They teach to the command term. The tutor should be able to tell your child, unprompted, why a six-mark "evaluate" answer looks structurally different from a six-mark "explain" answer.
- They work from past papers and mark schemes, early. Not as revision in the final term, but as the shape of teaching from the start.
- They can support internal assessment without writing it. This is a genuine line, and a good tutor holds it. Coursework has to be the student's own work; a tutor who offers to "handle" an IA is offering your child an academic-misconduct problem, not a service.
- They name the syllabus version. Boards revise. A tutor who knows which specification your child is sitting is a tutor who has taught it recently.
Five questions worth asking before you hire
- Which board and which level have you taught, and how recently?
- How many students have you taken through the full two-year Diploma or the IGCSE series?
- How do you handle internal assessment support?
- Which command terms do students in this subject lose the most marks on, and how do you fix that?
- Can we do a paid trial session on a past paper question?
That last one matters more than the rest combined. A single session against a real past paper tells you more than any amount of CV reading.
Online is genuinely fine for these boards
International-board tutors are thin on the ground outside the metros, and that shortage is the main reason families settle for a tutor who has never taught the board. Online tuition removes the constraint: for IB and IGCSE specifically, a tutor two cities away who has taught your child's exact syllabus is a better choice than a strong local tutor who has not.
Screen-shared past papers and annotated mark schemes work well online — arguably better than on paper, since both of you are looking at the same marked-up document.
What it costs
International-board tuition usually carries a premium over CBSE and ICSE, for a straightforward reason: fewer tutors are qualified for it, and the syllabus demands more preparation per class. Rather than quote a national average that would be wrong for most cities, we publish what tutors on TutorGali actually charge, updated from live profiles — see tuition fees across India, or your own city's fee guide for the local picture.
Finding one
You can browse verified tutors by board directly: IB tuition and IGCSE tuition list every tutor who has stated that board, along with their rates and the cities they cover. Every profile shows qualifications and teaching mode upfront, and contacting a tutor is free.
